In the war with the Ottoman Empire, Slunj became the westernmost point of defense and the easternmost point of Napoleon’s empire.
After conquering this part, Napoleon’s Marshal Marmont fortified the border with the Turks. At the same time, the ideas of the French Revolution were being implemented, such as the suspension of feudal and church privileges. All citizens become equal before the court, civil marriage and freedom of religion are introduced. Education and transport infrastructure are also being modernized.
In memory of that time, the remains of a magazine used by Napoleon’s army to store food and weapons can be seen today.
