Written by Matija Čaić

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centurie, a noblewoman lived in Osijek who was called a catmother because of her peculiarity. Her real name was Paulina Hermann.

A noblewoman and philanthropist

Paulina was a philanthropist who selflessly used her status and wealth to help poor people and abandoned animals. She also set aside part of the money for the beautiful Osijek Cathedral.

In addition to the bunch of cats she adopted in her palace, there were other animals, and allegedly even a real tiger.

In gratitude, the people of Osijek erected a monument to her.
